Is a Burgundy wine day worth it with children?

For a curious child, often yes: a ride in an old Citroën 2CV, a vintage Land Rover in the vines and the medieval presses of the Clos de Vougeot are not wasted on a ten-year-old. The catch is the age rules, which vary by day and are strict. This post sets each one out, so the Burgundy tour you book takes everyone in your party.

What children will like most

  • The Clos de Vougeot. Medieval presses, a Cistercian cellar and old kitchens. The English guided tour is EUR 7 for ages 8 to 16.
  • The Hôtel-Dieu. A 15th-century hospital under a patterned tile roof, with an audioguide in four languages for children.
  • The Palais des Ducs tower. 316 steps to a view over Dijon's rooftops.
  • A 2CV. Three hours through Pommard and Volnay in a classic French car.
  • A Land Rover. A day in an old four-by-four, with an hour at the Roche de Solutré.

What to prepare for

The days are long. A shared full day runs seven to eight and a half hours, and a day from Paris twelve, much of it in a minivan. Tastings rarely come with food, and one operator advises a good breakfast because snacks are not served with the wine. Pack water and something for your children to eat between stops.

Think about access too. The Authentica private days, the Land Rover day and the private day from Paris say they are wheelchair accessible; most shared days are not. If you have a stroller, the private route day from Beaune carries one. The shared days meet at a kerb, while the private ones collect you from your hotel, which is easier with small children.

The best days for a family

The Land Rover day from Mâcon suits a family best: ages 7 and up, lunch in the fare, grape juice instead of wine, and train tickets from Lyon included. It costs $582 a person. The Authentica private day with ten crus takes children with an adult and picks you up within 10 km of Beaune or Dijon. It is non-refundable, so be sure of your date.

With a teenager who likes to learn, the small-group day from Dijon works well: children from four ride on a youth fare, and lunch is in the fare. The 2CV half day takes one child from four with two adults, and three hours is about right for younger ones.

For non-drinkers and designated drivers

You can join any day and simply skip the glass; nobody is made to taste. The villages day from Dijon has no tasting at all in 2026: you spend it in Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, Semur-en-Auxois and Châteauneuf-en-Auxois instead, though it takes adults only. On the Land Rover day, non-drinkers get locally made grape juice.

The simplest way to see the vineyards without a designated driver is to let a tour do the driving, which is one reason people book one. What a non-drinker gets from the day is the rest of it: the villages, the cellars, the walls around the vines and, on some days, lunch.

Useful tip. Travelling with teenagers? Pair a morning at the Hôtel-Dieu with an afternoon at the Clos de Vougeot, and keep the adults-only days for a day the grown-ups go alone.

A family day in Beaune

Start at the Hôtel-Dieu, which opens at 9 am every day. Give it at least an hour, and let the children follow the audioguide. From 1 April to 15 November it stays open until 7:30 pm, so there is no rush. If you arrived on the regional train, your ticket gets you a reduced entry. In the afternoon, take the 2CV half day from the tourist office, or drive yourself: a 2CV rental near Beaune comes with infant seats.

A family day in Dijon

In Dijon, climb the tower of the Palais des Ducs in the morning, then walk the historic centre. For the afternoon, the English tour at the Clos de Vougeot runs at 3:30 pm every day, and you reach it by car south along the Côte de Nuits. Book it ahead, and ask about heat: the château shortens its tours in very hot weather.

  • Young children: a private route day from Beaune, or the Authentica days.
  • Children of 7 and over: the Land Rover day from Mâcon.
