Two towns, the vines between them and the cellars under them. Weighing up a
Burgundy tour? These are the places the day takes you.
The first frames are the towns. The Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune opens the set, its courtyard
under roofs of glazed polychrome tiles and its pointed dormers up close. Then Dijon: the
Palais des Ducs and its tower above the square, rooftops round a Gothic spire, half-timbered
houses and an old street after rain.
Next you are on the Côte de Nuits. The Clos de Vougeot's château stands behind its walls
in autumn gold, and again through a gap in an old stone wall. A hut painted Chambertin Clos de
Bèze stands in its rows, and the slope falls away to a village below. On the Côte de Beaune,
a stone gateway names Chevaliers-Montrachet and a roadside sign names Aloxe-Corton.
The vineyards come through the year: rows in low sun, gold across a valley, a patchwork of
autumn parcels, leaves turned red and black grapes on the vine. Two 2CVs trundle along a vine
track. The set ends underground, among barrels under stone vaults, dusty old bottles, an old
wooden press, a Clos de Tart case by candlelight and a glass of Corton Grand Cru.
