Dijon is where the wine road begins. Destination Dijon puts kilometre zero of the Route des Grands Crus in the city, and the road runs south to Beaune and Santenay. Gevrey-Chambertin, the first village on it, is the first stop of several days here.
What changes from day to day is the côte. Some days spend their hours among the red Grand Cru villages of the Côte de Nuits, and some among the great whites of the Côte de Beaune, in Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault. Some take a little of both. One leaves the wine behind for the Auxois villages, and one stays in town, in a vaulted cellar under a hotel.
You can also spend the rest of your stay on foot. Dijon's historic centre is part of the UNESCO listing of the Climats, and the tower of the Palais des Ducs is 46 m high, with 316 steps to the top.
