What a Burgundy private tour actually is
It is the same Côte d'Or, with nobody else in the car. A guide or a driver-guide collects
your party, usually at your hotel, and the route bends to what you ask for: more Grand Crus,
more whites, a longer lunch. Most private days last seven or eight hours. The 2CV half day
lasts three, and the day from Paris twelve.
The price works in one of two ways, and it is the first thing to check. Most fares are per
person, and several need two people to book. Some are per car: up to four on the private
route day from Beaune, up to six with the custom planner, and up to two from Paris. For
those, the price shown buys the whole vehicle.
Most private days stay on the Côte d'Or between Dijon and Beaune. One meets you at Mâcon
station and crosses from the Mâconnais into the Beaujolais, and one collects you in Paris for
Chablis and Beaune.
Why choose a private tour
You are collected at your door
Each private day sets its own pickup area, so check that yours covers your hotel. The
Authentica days collect you in Beaune, Dijon or within 10 km of either. The custom planner
collects you anywhere between Beaune and Dijon, and Along Burgundy in either town or nearby.
The 2CV half day picks you up free within 5 km of Beaune, and for EUR 50 within 15 km.
The route follows your taste
Along Burgundy chooses the wineries to suit what you like to drink. The custom planner
books every visit for you and hands you a detailed itinerary. Authentica's six-cru day pours
up to 20 Premier and Grand Cru wines, and its ten-cru day walks you among the Grand Cru plots
before Chassagne-Montrachet.
The entry the shared days skip
The shared Grand Cru day stops outside the Clos de Vougeot for ten minutes. Au Tour du Vin
and À La Française take you inside instead, for 40 minutes and an hour.
The private day from Paris puts your entry to the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune in the fare.
Children, strollers and wheelchairs
The Authentica private days take children with an adult, carry infant seats and are
listed for wheelchairs. The Land Rover day takes children from 7 and pours local grape juice
for anyone who does not drink. On a shared day, many of those doors are closed.
Private tours vs a shared small-group day
The shared days from Dijon and Beaune carry up to eight guests at a fixed time from a kerb
in town. Here is what changes when the car is yours.
| Private day | Shared small-group day |
|---|
| Who is in the car | Your party only | Up to eight guests |
| Where it starts | Your hotel, Mâcon station or Paris | A kerb in Dijon or the Beaune tourist office |
| What you pay | $275 to $1,159 per person, or $1,170 to $1,510 per car | $166 to $333 per person |
| The route | Set with you, or planned to your taste | Fixed by the operator |
| Clos de Vougeot | Entry in the fare with Au Tour du Vin or À La Française | Ten minutes outside, or ridden past |
| Refunds | Some cannot be refunded once booked | A full refund up to 24 hours ahead |
| Best for | Couples, families and friends who want their own pace | Solo travellers and tighter budgets |
Check availability from $551
For a couple, a private day costs well above a shared one: per-person private fares start
at $551 for a full day, against $166 to $333 shared. For four in a car
priced per group, the gap closes. The private route day from Beaune is $1,170 for up to
four, about $292 each, which is less per head than the shared Grand
Cru day at $333.
What you get, and what you don't
- Included on all of them: private transport and a guide, driver-guide or
driver, with hotel pickup on most.
- Tastings: in the fare on most. The custom planner leaves the domains'
fees to you, about EUR 150-300 a head paid on the spot. The Bourgogne Gold listing names
lunch and water but no tasting, so ask what its visits pour.
- Lunch: in the fare on Authentica's six-cru day (a three-course set menu,
not on Sundays), the Bourgogne Gold day (a mâchon of gougères, charcuterie, cheeses and bread)
and the Land Rover day. On À La Française's day you buy it in Beaune; Au Tour du Vin, Along
Burgundy, the custom planner and the day from Paris leave it to you as well.
- Entry: the Clos de Vougeot with Au Tour du Vin and À La Française, and
the Hôtel-Dieu on the day from Paris.
- Not included: gratuities on several, and train tickets with the custom
planner. The Land Rover day, by contrast, sends you your train tickets from Lyon.
Up to 20 Premier and Grand Cru wines, with lunch
Authentica collects you within 10 km of Beaune or Dijon for three wineries and a three-course lunch at a family estate, except on Sundays. The fare is non-refundable.

Planning a private tour
- Budget per person or per car: for two of you, double the per-person
fare. Where the fare is per car, it stays the same up to the car's limit: $1,170 for up
to four, $1,399 for up to six, $1,510 for up to two from Paris.
- Party size: the Bourgogne Gold, À La Française, Along Burgundy and 2CV
days need two people to book. The 2CV takes three guests at most.
- Refunds: the 2CV half day, the Authentica days and the custom planner
cannot be refunded once booked. Fix your dates before you book them.
- Start times: 9 am with À La Française, 9:30 am with Bourgogne Gold,
Along Burgundy and the Land Rover, 7:30 am from Paris. The others agree a time with
you.
- Sundays: Authentica's set lunch is not served on Sundays, so pick
another day if lunch matters to you.
- Language: the custom planner's driver's English varies with
availability, though the presentations at the domains are in English.
Who should choose something else
- If you travel alone. Several private fares need two to book, and the
rest charge you the whole per-person fare. A shared day from $166 puts you in a van of
eight instead.
- If you arrive by train for the day. Burgundy wine tours from Dijon start at kerbs you walk to
from the station.
- If you only want an hour of wine. The 90-minute cellar tasting in Dijon
costs $63.
- If you would rather drive yourself. The 2CV rentals cost $292 to
$362 for the car, though somebody then skips the tastings.
- If your dates might move. Stay with the fares that refund up to 24 hours
ahead, and leave the non-refundable days aside.

Frequently asked questions
What does a price per group of up to four mean?
The fare buys the whole car for up to four people, so a party of four pays it once. The Beaune private route day is $1,170 per group of up to four, and the custom planner $1,399 per group of up to six.
Do the tours pick you up at your hotel?
The private days do, in Beaune, Dijon and nearby: within 10 km of either town on the Authentica days, anywhere between Beaune and Dijon for the custom planner. The shared days meet at a kerb in town instead.
How much does a private day cost for two?
Twice the per-person fare on most: $1,103 on the Along Burgundy day, $1,374 with À La Française. Where the fare is per car it does not change: $1,170 for up to four on the private route day from Beaune.
Are the tastings included on a private tour?
On most, yes. The custom planner leaves the domains' fees to you, about EUR 150-300 a head on the day, and the Bourgogne Gold listing names lunch and water but no tasting, so ask what its visits pour.
Can I cancel a private tour?
Most private days refund in full up to 24 hours ahead. The 2CV half day, the Authentica private days and the custom planner cannot be refunded once booked, so fix your dates before you book those.
Is there a private tour for a wheelchair user?
The Authentica private days, the Land Rover day from Mâcon and the private day from Paris are listed as wheelchair accessible. Tell the operator about your needs when you book, because cellars have steps.
What is a 2CV tour?
A Citroën 2CV is the classic French car with a roll-back canvas roof. From Beaune you can take a guided 3-hour half day in one with a five-wine tasting, for $275 a head, or rent one and drive yourself from Jouey or Saint-Loup-Géanges.
