Burgundy Tours FAQs
Prices, the town you start in, the tastings in your fare, the train from Paris, children and the sights' own hours. Ready for your Burgundy booking? The answers below settle most of what you need first.
Two answers matter more than the rest. First, where your day starts: a kerb in Dijon, the Beaune tourist office, your hotel, Paris or Mâcon. Then which wine area it spends its hours in: the red Grand Cru villages of the Côte de Nuits, the great whites of the Côte de Beaune, or Chablis. Every tour card says both.
How much does a Burgundy wine tour cost?
From $63 for a 90-minute cellar tasting in Dijon to $166-$333 a head for a shared full day from Dijon or Beaune. Private days run $551-$1,159 a head, and a private car of two from Paris is $1,510. The shared day from Paris to Chablis is $269.
Do you need a tour to go wine tasting in Burgundy?
Not for a cellar tasting in Dijon, the Clos de Vougeot or the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune: all three take visitors directly. A tour earns its fare when you want several domains booked for you, a day with eight to fourteen wines, and nobody in your party driving after the tasting.
Which is the better base for a wine tour, Dijon or Beaune?
Dijon has the TGV from Paris and the shared days that meet at Place Darcy, Saint-Bénigne church and rue Monge. Beaune sits inside the Côte, with the Grand Cru route day and the 2CV half day leaving its tourist office. The private days collect you in either town.
Are the tastings included in the fare?
On every shared wine day, yes: the tastings are in the price. The custom private planner leaves the domains' fees to you, about EUR 150-300 a head paid on the spot. The villages day from Dijon has no tasting at all in 2026.
Is lunch included?
On some days only. Lunch is in the fare on the Dijon lunch days, the e-bike day, the Authentica day with six Crus, and the Bourgogne Gold and Land Rover private days. The Beaune Grand Cru day, the day from Paris to Chablis and most private days leave lunch to you.
Can you do a Burgundy wine tour as a day trip from Paris?
Yes, in about twelve hours. The shared day drives to Chablis for $269 a head, and a private car for two reaches Chablis and Beaune for $1,510. For the Côte de Nuits you are better off taking the train to Dijon and joining a day there.
How do you get from Paris to Dijon?
By TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon. One operator's own example is the 7:56 am, in Dijon at 9:29, with a 5 pm train back. Check SNCF for your date, because the timetable changes.
What is the difference between the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune?
The Côte de Nuits is the northern half, from Gevrey-Chambertin to Nuits-Saint-Georges, and its Grand Cru villages are mostly red Pinot Noir. The Côte de Beaune runs south of it and adds the great white Chardonnays of Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. Pick the côte by the wine you want to taste.
Can you visit Romanée-Conti?
You can see the Romanée-Conti vineyard: the Beaune Grand Cru day stops beside it on the Route des Grands Crus. None of the tours sells a visit or a tasting at the domaine itself, so book a day that pours other Grand Crus nearby.
Can you go inside the Clos de Vougeot?
Yes, the Clos de Vougeot opens every day, and it sells a EUR 15 guided tour in English at 11:30 am and 3:30 pm by reservation. Two private days include the entry in the fare. The shared Grand Cru day stops outside for ten minutes without going in.
Can children come on a wine tour?
On some. The e-bike day, the Ophorus days, the Dijon cellar tasting and the custom planner take adults only. The Authentica private days take children with an adult, and the Land Rover day swaps the wine for grape juice for anyone who does not drink.
What is the cancellation policy?
Most tours refund in full if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead. The 2CV half day, the two Authentica private days and the custom planner are non-refundable once booked, and each card says so.
How many people are on a small-group tour?
Eight at most on every shared day from Dijon, Beaune and Paris. The private days carry only your party, from two people on most of them.
When is the best time for a Burgundy wine tour?
May to September gives you long days in the vines, with Dijon's average highs between 20 and 27 °C. Autumn adds the harvest and the Hospices sale. Winter is quieter, and the Hôtel-Dieu and the Clos de Vougeot keep shorter hours.
Is there a bike tour through the vineyards?
Yes: a guided e-bike day from 78 rue Monge in Dijon through the Côte de Nuits, with two cellars, at least eight wines and lunch, for $585 a head. It takes adults only, and the transfer to the bikes and back is in the fare.
What is a Grand Cru?
The top of Burgundy's four levels: Régionale, Village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru. The BIVB counts 33 Grand Cru appellations. Premier Crus are named plots, or climats, inside a Village appellation.
How many appellations does Burgundy have?
The BIVB counts 84: 7 Régionale, 44 Village and 33 Grand Cru appellations. The figure of about a hundred you may see also counts the extra place names allowed on some labels.
Is Burgundy a UNESCO World Heritage site?
Part of it is. UNESCO inscribed the Climats of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune in 2015, with the historic centres of Dijon and Beaune. Chablis, the Mâconnais and the Beaujolais are outside the listed property.
Is there a tour of Chablis?
Yes: both days from Paris spend their hours in Chablis, one shared and one private. From Dijon or Beaune, the Côte is closer than Chablis, so the tours there stay on it.
Is there a tour of the Mâconnais?
One private day in a vintage Land Rover meets you at Mâcon station at 9:30 am, for $582 a head. It tastes in the Mâconnais in the morning and crosses into the Beaujolais in the afternoon.
Do the tours pick you up at your hotel?
The private days do, in Beaune, Dijon and nearby: within 10 km of either town on the Authentica days, anywhere between Beaune and Dijon for the custom planner. The shared days meet at a kerb in town instead.
Where exactly do the Dijon tours start?
At a kerb in the centre: 16 Place Darcy, the front of Saint-Bénigne church, or 78 rue Monge for the e-bike day. The cellar tasting is at La Cave du Palais, five minutes' walk from Place de la République. Your booking names your own kerb and time.
Where do the Beaune tours start?
The Grand Cru route day and the 2CV half day meet at the tourist office at Porte Marie de Bourgogne, 6 boulevard Perpreuil. Beaune has a second tourist office, so check the address before you set out. The private days collect you from your hotel.
What is a 2CV tour?
A Citroën 2CV is the classic French car with a roll-back canvas roof. From Beaune you can take a guided 3-hour half day in one with a five-wine tasting, for $275 a head, or rent one and drive yourself from Jouey or Saint-Loup-Géanges.
Can you drive yourself between tastings?
You can, in a rented 2CV or your own car, but then someone in your party is not tasting. A tour or a private driver means nobody drives after the wine.
Are the tours wheelchair accessible?
Most are not. The two Authentica private days, the private day from Paris and the Land Rover day say they are, so ask the operator about your own needs before you book.
What languages are the tours in?
Every tour runs in English. Several also run in French, and one each in Spanish and German, so check the tour's own details if you want another language.
What does a price per group of up to four mean?
The fare buys the whole car for up to four people, so a party of four pays it once. The Beaune private route day is $1,170 per group of up to four, and the custom planner $1,399 per group of up to six.
Do you tip the guide?
Gratuities are excluded on most fares, so a tip is your call. If the day went well, it is welcome.
When is the Hôtel-Dieu open?
The Hôtel-Dieu opens every day. From 1 April to 15 November it opens 9 am to 7:30 pm; the rest of the year 9 am to 12:30 pm and 2 to 6:30 pm, with only the afternoon on 1 January and 25 December. The ticket desk closes an hour before.
When is the Hospices de Beaune wine sale?
By tradition on the third Sunday of November, under the Halles de Beaune. The 165th sale was held on Sunday 16 November 2025. Check the Hospices' own announcement before you plan a trip around the 2026 sale.
What should you wear on a wine tour?
Good shoes and a warm layer for the cellars, which one operator asks every guest to bring. Dress for the weather too: the Grand Cru day from Beaune runs in any.
Should you eat before a tasting?
Yes. Tastings in the cellars rarely come with food, and a 14-wine day starts at 9:30 in the morning, so have a proper breakfast.
